I know, you are thinking, "What an interesting title to a story," and you are now wondering exactly what I would have to write about Trevor's thumbnail.......well, I'm glad you asked. Last night, Trevor had a baseball game, and because he has been doing so well lately in practice, the coach moved him up to second base from right field and moved him up to the fifth batting position from dead last. Way to go Trevor!
At his second at bat however, Trevor swung hard at an inside pitch and fouled it off of his thumb and first finger. The finger is just bruised but the thumbnail was opened like a door and blood came a running out. I was coaching first base at the time and got to him before anyone else did. I closed the door and held pressure on his thumb. He was hurting but didn't scream or whine at all, although tears did come to his eyes.
I'm very proud of the way he reacted. He was more upset that the team had to take an out because he couldn't return to his at bat.
We wrapped it tightly and put ice on it for the trip home and then he took some tylenol and kept icing it until bedtime. Through it all he was very brave and didn't complain too much.
The thumbnail actually "hinged" on the side, not the bottom like you might expect, but only half of it opened. Maybe it won't rot and fall off. We will wait and see.

Ouch. I hope you feel better Trevor. What kind of rule is that, that he had to take an out? If a player gets hurt, shouldn't someone else come take over his at bat and inherit his strike count?
